Flame Retardant and Arc Resistant Fabric
June 05, 2023
Flame retardant and arc resistant fabrics are designed to provide protection against fire-related hazards and electric arc flashes. Flame retardant fabrics are treated with chemicals or made from inherently flame-resistant fibers, which prevent or slow down the spread of fire. Arc resistant fabrics, on the other hand, are specifically designed to protect against the intense heat and energy generated during an electric arc flash event.
Both flame retardant and arc resistant fabrics must undergo rigorous testing to ensure their effectiveness. Flame resistant fabrics are tested using the ASTM F1506 standard, which requires the fabric to be flame resistant before it can be tested for its arc rating. Arc ratings are determined using the ASTM F1959, IEC 61482-2, IEC 61482-1-1 Method A, and IEC 61482-1-1 Method B standards.
