How to distinguish between polyester and nylon?

December 02, 2024
Polyester
Polyester-Polyester fiber, also known as POLYESTER, is characterized by good air permeability and moisture removal. There is also strong resistance to acids and alkalis, and UV resistance. Generally, the fabrics with multiples of 75D are polyester, such as 75D, 150D, 300D, 600D, 1200D, and 1800D. The fabric is darker and rougher than nylon.

Nylon
Nylon-Nylon, also known as Nylon, polyamide fiber. The advantages are high strength, high wear resistance, high chemical resistance, good deformation resistance and aging resistance. The disadvantage is that it feels hard. The more famous ones are PERTEX and CORDURA. Generally, fabrics with multiples of 70D are nylon, such as 70D, 210D, 420D, 840D, and 1680D are all nylon materials. The fabric has a brighter gloss and a slippery feel.

Polyester V/S Nylon
Nylon generally has better elasticity! The dyeing temperature is 100 degrees! Dye with neutral or acid dyes. The high resistance is worse than polyester, but its strength is better, and it is good against pilling! The dyeing temperature is 130 degrees (high temperature and high pressure), and the hot melt method is generally baked below 200 degrees! The main feature of polyester is good stability. In general, adding a small amount of polyester to clothes can help resist wrinkles and plasticity. The disadvantage is that it is easy to be static and easy to pilling. However, these shortcomings of the improved polyester have been improved.
Polyester nylon (nylon)
Mechanical properties: high breaking strength, high elongation; high initial modulus; good elastic recovery; fabric stiff, good abrasion resistance, and good dimensional stability. The breaking strength and buckling strength are high, and the elongation is high; the initial modulus is low, and the breaking work is large; the elasticity is good, the abrasion resistance is good, and the fabric has a shape-retaining and stiff, poor stiffness.
Moisture absorption dyeing property: Moisture absorption dyeing difference W = 0.4%; normal temperature dyeing cannot be used; it is easy to be static and has poor stain resistance. Moisture absorption dyeability W =4.5%, better than polyester.
Thermal properties High melting point 255-265℃; good heat resistance and thermal stability. Poor heat resistance, safe use temperature: lower than 93°C (nylon 6), lower than 130°C (nylon 66).
Optical properties Good light resistance, second only to acrylic. Poor light resistance.
Corrosion resistance, acid and strong alkali resistance, no mildew and no moth, alkali resistance and acid resistance
Density 1.38g/cm³ 1.14g/cm³

Physical properties
Generally speaking, nylon oxford fabrics are used to make bags, and the feel of the two will be different. The feel of polyester is rougher, and the feel of nylon is smoother. In addition, you can use your nails to scrape. After the nails are scraped, the obvious traces are tapen, and the less obvious traces are nylon, but this method is not as intuitive and easy to tell as the burning method.

Chemical nature
The simplest difference between nylon and polyester is the burning method! The black smoke from polyester, the white smoke from nylon, and the residue after burning, the crumb of the polyester will be broken, and the nylon will become plastic! The price of nylon is twice that of polyester.

Nylon quickly crimps and melts into a white gel near the flame. It melts and drops and bubbles in the flame. There is no flame when burning. It is difficult to continue burning away from the flame and emits a celery smell. The light brown melt is not easy to grind after cooling.

Polyester is easy to ignite, and it melts when it is near the flame. When it burns, it emits black smoke while melting. It shows a yellow flame and emits an aromatic smell. After burning, the ashes are dark brown lumps, which can be broken with fingers.
Polyester nylon (nylon)
Close to the flame Close to the flame-softened, melted and crimped, combustible, softened and contracted
Melting in the flame, burning slowly, with yellow flame, blue flame edge, black smoke from the top of the flame, curling, melting, burning slowly, producing small bubbles, the flame is very small, blue
Leave the flame and continue to burn, sometimes stop burning and self-extinguish, stop burning and self-extinguish
Burning smell slightly aromatic or sweet, amino smell
Residue characteristics: The ashes are hard and black in the shape of a ball, which can be broken with fingers. The ash is light brown molten material, which is not easy to be broken with fingers.

Difference in performance
Simply put, nylon has better performance than polyester, but its cost is higher than polyester. Nylon products are better than polyester products in terms of abrasion resistance, stress, color fastness, gloss, etc., and are not prone to wrinkles.

The main difference between polyester fabric and nylon fabric is:
① The price of nylon is about 1 times higher than that of polyester.
② Nylon is smoother and softer than polyester.
③ The wear resistance is almost the same.
④ Nylon has a little elasticity. Polyester has no weakness.
⑤ Nylon dyeing is more difficult than polyester dyeing.
